Candida infections of the human body are not common as this species of fungi (yeast) usually occur in small populations on the skin and within the cavities – mouth, intestines and vagina. However under certain conditions, an yeast overgrowth may occur allowing the candida to switch from a harmless microorganism to an invading pathogen.

The most common species of candida  that pose a threat to your health is Candida albicans. Ths yeast species is known for causing skin infections in nappy rash, oral or vaginal thrush. However a candida overgrowth within the bowels is possible in immunocompromised persons (where the natural immunity is depressed). This may be seen in debilitating chronic conditions including diabetes and cancer or immune related disorders like HIV/AIDS.

The issue of intestinal candida overgrowth is controversial as the intestinal bacteria along with naturally occurring bowel fungi usually prevents an increase in yeast population. However any upset to the natural bacteria and fungal population can allow for intestinal candida overgrowth to occur.

Symptoms of Intestinal Candida Overgrowth

  • Persistent diarrhea including diarrhea immediately after eating.
  • Stomach or intestinal cramps with severe pain.
  • Excessive gas (flatulence) and bloating
  • Malabsorption of nutrients leading to nutritional deficiencies – vitamins and minerals.
  • Fatigue (tiredness)
  • Symptoms of toxicity including fatigue (tiredness), headaches, loss of appetite and a general feeling of being ‘unwell’ (lack of vitality, vigor and reduced sense of wellbeing).

Naturopathic Treatment for Intestinal Candida Overgrowth

  • A probiotic is essential for restoring the natural bacteria in the bowel and hampering candida population growth. Sacchromyces boulardii is probably the most effective  probiotic in cases of intestinal candida overgrowth and can be used in a capsule form to deliver  Sacchromyces spores into the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Homeopathic remedies like Podophyllum 6CH to 30CH, Arsenicum album 6CH to 30CH and Carbo vegetabilis 6CH to 30CH may assist with reducing diarrhea and gas bloating.
  • Other homeopathic remedies like Mag phos D6 and Colocynthis 6CH may be useful for reducing intestinal cramps.
  • A herbal complex of burdock, rhubarb, sorrel and slippery elm (Essiac formula) will assist with gastrointestinal symptoms.
  • A simplex vitamin prescription of individual vitamins and minerals may assist with any nutritional deficiencies.

Intestinal candida overgrowth should not be immediately diagnosed if you are experiencing the symptoms above. Rather consult with your medical doctor to exclude other gastrointestinal disorders before commencing any therapy for intestinal candida overgrowth.
