Period pain is often accepted as a regular symptom associated with menses but is usually an indication of a hormone imbalance. Painful periods may occur as a symptom in many menstrual disorders like polycystic ovary syndrome but in healthy women, period pain should signal the need for medical intervention.
Pain should be differentiated from a mild ache or cramping associated with periods. While there may be some discomfort during ovulation or your periods, period pain is usually severe and intolerable. Women suffering with period pains may require analgesics (painkillers) for pain relief but this is often short lived. In many cases where painful periods is a regular occurrence, women dread their monthly periods and some may attempt to use oral contraceptives in a reckless manner (avoiding the placebo pills) in order to prevent a period. This is a dangerous practice that can predispose you to gynecological disorders or cause infertility.
Symptoms associated with Painful Periods
While pain is the predominant symptom, other signs and symptoms may occur concurrently.
- Dizziness or feeling light headed
- Irritability
- Severe cramping that may ease slightly with using a hot water bottle, crouching or lying in the fetal position.
- Nausea and even vomiting
Some of these signs and symptoms are due to the body’s response to severe pain or may occur as a result of hormonal fluctuations that also cause period pain.
Homeopathic & Naturopathic Treatment
- Using a magnesium supplement may be effective in reducing cramping and pain associated with periods. A calcium-magnesium supplement should also be considered. If you are also suffering with other nutritional deficiencies like anemia, consider a simplex vitamin and mineral prescription.
- Regular exercise may also reduce the incidence and severity of period pain.
- Consider using a homeopathic anti-inflammatory for pain relief although this will only offer short term, symptomatic relief.
- A herbal female hormone stabilizer or any similar herbal product containing herbs like chaste berry (Vitex agnus castus) or dong quai (Angelica sinensis) may be helpful for preventing period pain. Herbal hormone stabilizers should not be used during your menses.
- A homeopathic female hormone stabilizer containing homeopathic remedies like Phosphurus, Folliculinum or Natrum muriaticum may assist with regulating the female hormone levels. This could be useful for easing period pain. Refer to to Natural Female Hormone Stabilizer remedies for more information.
