Eczema and psoriasis are two conditions known for excessively dry and itchy skin. Many emollients prove to be unsuitable as they are water based creams that quickly absorb into the skin leaving the outer layers dry and itchy. In these conditions, the skin cannot produce its natural oils (natural moisturizing factor) for lubrication due to the inflammation of the skin.

A simple home remedy emolient cream can be useful for lubricating your skin and is less expensive than an lipid cream.

500 ml (17 fl oz) aqueous cream (fragrance and colorant free)

60 ml (2 fl oz) glycerin

Mix 60ml (2 fluid ounce) of glycerin into 500ml (17 fl oz) aqueous cream. Due to the viscosity of both ingredients, you will need to mix thoroughly for a few minutes.

This simple emollient cream provides an effective barrier for dry itchy skin while moisturizing the skin. It is safe to use on children and adults.  Apply moderately over the affected area two or three times daily. If required, apply petroleum jelly after thoroughly rubbing in the emollient cream.

This emollient cream formula is used by practitioners as an inexpensive barrier cream for eczema, psoriasis, nappy rashhives and dry, itchy skin.

If you notice your symptoms aggravating, stop using the emollient cream immediately and consult with your medical practitioner.
